About

Offsite Dance Project is a non-profit organization formed in 2008 to promote dance-based performing arts in a variety of venues outside of the theater. The name “Offsite” means out of the ordinary. Based in Yokohama, we plan and produce highly accessible performance projects in urban spaces in Japan and abroad, including on public transportation, within modern architectural spaces, and in parks, commercial spaces, vacant stores, and streets. By incorporating the various spaces and environments around us into our work, we expand the scope and possibilities of dance itself and create experiences that stimulate the imagination of the artists and in the eyes of the audience.

Major activities include the artist-run dance community forum, “We dance” (2009-12): the “Tamagawa Theatre” set in the Tokyu Tamagawa Line, a co-production with a NPO for community development in Ota-ku, Tokyo: the “INSIDE/OUT” on the theme of architecture and the body, a co-production with the Setagaya Art Museum: a city-based circulating dance project at the “TBA Festival” in Portland, U.S.: the “Borrowed Landscape Project”, a site-specific project in an everyday space organized by European and Japanese artists: the mobile “DANCE TRUCK PROJECT” that uses the back of a truck: the regional revitalization project, “Honmoku Art Project”: an international co-production of the “RE/PLAY DANCE Edit”. Since 2009, we have also been coordinating art education and promoting contemporary dance.
